What impact do group assignments have on friendships between students?

Do Group Assignments Strengthen Student Friendships? Here's What Our Survey Revealed

Group assignments have long been a cornerstone of academic life, enco
uraging students to collaborate, communicate, and problem-solve. But beyond the grades and deadlines, what impact do these assignments really have on the friendships between students?

To get a clearer picture, we conducted a small survey asking students from the three countries a simple question: How do group assignments affect your relationships with peers? The responses revealed a similar positive view — with a few thoughtful caveats.

The Verdict: Mostly Positive

Out of the 10 students who responded, the majority described group assignments as a positive influence on friendships. Words like “bring us together,” “strengthens friendships,” and “positive” were echoed across multiple answers.

One respondent shared, “They bring us together, we get to know each other and create a stronger bond as colleagues,” while another pointed out that group work “makes communication between students easier.”

Several participants emphasized that working together helps uncover shared interests and builds valuable teamwork skills — something essential in both academic and professional settings.

Collaboration Creates Connection

Some responses highlighted the subtle social benefits of group work. One student simply said, “We talk more and get closer,” showing how even casual collaboration can deepen existing connections or spark new ones.

Others saw it as a way to develop essential interpersonal skills. “They bring students together and make them work as a team, which is a key skill in any career,” one noted.

Not Always a Game-Changer

Despite the overwhelmingly positive tone, not everyone felt group assignments had a strong impact. One participant wrote, “I don’t think they’re that important,” and another suggested it “depends on what the assignments are,” hinting that the type and quality of the project can influence the social outcome.

This reminds us that while group work can be a great tool for bonding, it’s not always guaranteed — and that thoughtful design of group tasks matters.

Final Thoughts

In short, the results of this small survey suggest that group assignments generally help bring students closer together, improve communication, and even lead to lasting friendships. They’re not a magic formula for connection, but when done right, they can make a big difference — not just in learning, but in the relationships that make the academic experience more meaningful.

  1. Group projects are fun! Random teammates can be a challenge, as not everyone is always willing to put in the work, but you also get the chance to work with people you might not otherwise meet.

  2. I think that group projects always bring new experiences and make you meet people you typically wouldn't work with. No matter if the experience from that is good or bad, it still brings new lessons to learn and apply later in life, and that is always a nice thing :)
